On what would have been the 150th birthday of the journal's founder, Sir Arthur Tansley, New Phytologist celebrates the publication of over 1200 reviews.

Many of these are from the journal's flagship Tansley series. Initiated with the Tansley reviews in 1985, and followed by the Tansley insights in 2015, the series is intended to provide a service to the plant science community. All articles are made free to read upon publication as part of the New Phytologist Foundation's not-for-profit remit.

The journal has published over 600 Tansley reviews, and over 200 Tansley insights. As well as providing an accessible overview of a specific area of plant science, each specially invited review can be a forum for the synthesis and presentation of ideas. Personal perspectives and thought-provoking discussions are encourages, in keeping with Tansley's philosophy.

Tansley insights are a key component of the New Phytologist Foundation's Tansley Medal competition for early career scientists. Each finalist in the annual competition writes one of the short reviews, which are published alongside a special editorial in an issue of New Phytologist.

New Phytologist also publishes Research reviews. These are mid-length, high-quality review articles focusing on timely issues, in a wide-ranging format.
