Biography

Francis Martin is an Emeritus Research Director at INRAE in Nancy, France, and Distinguished Professor at China Agricultural University in Beijing. His research centers on ectomycorrhizal fungi, with particular emphasis on comparative and environmental genomics approaches to understanding the function and ecological significance of soil fungi in forest ecosystems. He has also advanced our understanding of the molecular signaling mechanisms underlying mycorrhizal symbiosis. He leads the Joint Genome Institute's 1000 Fungal Genomes project and the Mycorrhizal Genomics Initiative, large-scale sequencing efforts to characterize the genomic features of plant-associated fungi, wood decayers, and soil saprotrophs.
