Biography
Ankila Hiremath is currently the coordinator for a programme to facilitate scientist-forest manager engagement at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, and is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore. Ankila obtained her PhD in Botany (Ecology) from the University of Florida, following which she worked as a scientist in the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation at ATREE. Her research has been on questions related to conservation, restoration, and sustainable resource use, at the interface of human and natural systems. Over the past two and a half decades she has worked in forests and savannas of the Biligiri Rangan Hills, Karnataka, the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, and in the Banni grasslands of Kutch. Much of this work has been on the ecological, socioeconomic, and human-wellbeing impacts of invasive alien species, and their management for habitat restoration in complex social-ecological systems. She was also a Lead Author on the IPBES thematic assessment report on invasive alien species and their control.
