The New Phytologist Foundation is pleased to announce a call for papers for a joint Special Collection of New Phytologist and Plants, People, Planet on the theme of 'Linking tree diversity, ecosystem resilience and climate regulation'.
There is a great need to understand the role of biodiversity in conferring ecosystem and climate resilience as climate change and land use patterns increasingly threaten the functioning of ecosystems globally.
With this Special Collection we aim to bring together an important body of research concerning tree diversity in ecosystems including native forests, agroforests, and urban ecosystems around the world. We invite studies that further our understanding on the causes and consequences of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in forests, including plant–biotic interactions and plant physiological responses to changes in environment influenced by tree diversity.
Research papers drawn from global forest biodiversity experiments and observations, that emphasize mechanisms by which interactions among tree species give rise to emergent properties at the ecosystem scale relevant to forest resilience and climate regulation are encouraged. The collection will highlight the influence of tree diversity on individual trees and ecosystem processes through lenses of plant physiology and community ecology and thus provide insight across different scales of organization.
We look forward to bringing together cutting-edge research in this area, including forward-looking, solutions-focused articles. Plants People Planet also welcomes policy-relevant work.
Authors wishing to contribute are invited to submit their manuscripts by 28 February 2027; however, early submissions are encouraged if manuscripts are ready in advance.
Author Guidelines
For this collection, we welcome all article types. While we will be commissioning reviews and opinion/viewpoints, authors are welcome to make suggestions for topics that fit within one of these article types by contacting the Senior Commissioning Editor, Holly Slater. If you are submitting a research paper please go directly to the submission site for your chosen journal and select the Special Collection title from the drop-down menu.

There are no guarantees of acceptance: submissions will undergo regular peer-review and only those meeting required publishing standards will be accepted. Please refer to each journal’s website for further details on scope, article type, how to compile your manuscript, as well as full details on style and legal requirements.
To ensure inclusion within the Special collection ALL papers must be submitted by the submission deadline and any subsequent dates set for the submission of revised manuscripts following peer review. We appreciate that the extent of revisions required for different papers may vary and our publication schedule is set to accommodate this. However, whilst we will do all we can to expedite the process of those papers rejected with resubmission encouraged, out of fairness to all authors and to maintain timeliness, we cannot guarantee inclusion within the Special collection. We would of course include your article in the next available regular issue once accepted. We therefore advise you to submit your manuscript ahead of the deadline if possible.
