We’re celebrating the 124th anniversary of the publication of New Phytologist’s first issue with a look back at highlights from the last year.
Welcoming Maarja Öpik
In January 2025 Maarja Öpik took up the position of Editor-in-Chief.
‘New Phytologist is a journal that inspires its readers and authors, and this is the main quality that I aspire to keep, strengthen and develop as an Editor-in-Chief,’ said Maarja.
‘Publishing inspiring papers and maintaining an active, engaging scientific community contributes towards strengthening the journal and its community.’
Special Collections
We published four Special Collections in 2025, each offering expertly curated research spanning the breadth of New Phytologist’s scope. Three Virtual Issues explored how plants respond to herbivory, piecing together the origin of land plants, and capturing current research on the ecology and evolution of nectaries. These were joined by a Special Collection on Anthromes published jointly with sister-journal Plants, People, Planet.
Demystifying peer review
Senior Editorial Assistant Lauren Colwell posted a series of articles full of advice and helpful tips for budding reviewers during Peer Review Week.
New Phytologist joins WeChat
In September we launched the official New Phytologist WeChat account, and look forward to expanding our engagement with our community on this platform.
