Biography

She completed her undergraduate degree in Geophysical Sciences - Meteorology at the University of Lisbon (2005), her Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences at the University of Lisbon (2011), and a postdoctoral fellowship at INPE. Since 2015, she has been a professor in the Department of Meteorology at UFRJ and coordinator of the Environmental Satellite Applications Laboratory (LASA). She has been a collaborating researcher at the Instituto Dom Luiz and the Forest Studies Center, both at the University of Lisbon, since 2018. Since 2020, she has been a member of the Climate Monitoring Experts Committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as the representative of Brazil. In 2023, she was awarded the Women in Science Latin America Prize by 3M for her contributions to satellite fire monitoring. She is an associate editor for the journals Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS), npj Natural Hazards - Nature and Journal of Pyrogeography. She is the creator of the ALARMES Platform https://alarmes.lasa.ufrj.br/, aimed at supporting fire management, prevention, and suppression in Brazil. She is a member of the Extreme Heat Working Group, led by the National Disaster Prevention and Response Office of the Health Ministry. The group aims to develop National Guidelines for preparedness, surveillance, and health response actions in extreme heat situations, given the increasing occurrence of extreme events and their impacts on public health. Her research areas include satellite monitoring of fires and wildfires, weather forecasts for fire danger, extreme weather events such as heatwaves and droughts, and their impacts on vegetation and public health
