Biography
I am an associate professor in the Center for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Sciences at the University of Vienna. The group I lead researches how microbiomes influence terrestrial biogeochemistry and the flow of carbon and nutrients above and belowground, with a particular focus on plant-associated biotrophs, including pathogens, endophytes, and mycorrhizal fungi. To study these fungi and other soil microbiome members, I employ a range of omics', culturing, microscopy, and stable isotope based tools. I especially emphasize the link between fungal communities and ecosystem functioning, with the goal of quantifying basic fungal contributions to ecosystem processes and applied forest management. By using a combination of observational, experimental, and statistical modeling approaches, I also simulate different future scenarios to better prepare and adapt to global change.
