Biography

Lisa Hülsmann is a forest ecologist and Professor of Ecosystem Analysis and Simulation at the University of Bayreuth, where she heads the EASI Lab at the Bayreuth Center of Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER). Her research aims to understand how ecosystem dynamics – particularly in forest communities – emerge from the interplay of demographic processes, species interactions, and environmental change. She combines large-scale ecological data with process-based models to explore how forests function across spatial and temporal scales. A central focus of her work is the role of biotic interactions in shaping forest structure, diversity, and resilience. Through international collaborations, she works with long-term forest monitoring networks and advanced statistical approaches to investigate mechanisms of tree mortality, competitive and density-dependent processes, and the maintenance of biodiversity. Her research also contributes to the development and calibration of demographic forest models that improve projections of forest responses to global change. Through this integrative perspective, Lisa Hülsmann seeks to advance a mechanistic understanding of forest interactions and their consequences for ecosystem stability, offering insights that link ecological theory with strategies for sustainable forest management and conservation.
