Biography

Christiane Werner is a full Professor of Ecosystem Physiology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. As a plant ecophysiologist by training, she is a lead scientist interested in plant and ecosystem responses to climate change, investigating processes from molecular to ecosystem scale with experimental lab and fieldwork. Her research on the interplay between plant volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and CO2 metabolism from sub-molecular to ecosystem scales received a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). Within this framework she conducted a large-scale drought experiment at the Biosphere 2, Arizona (B2WALD campaign) and international team. She received several awards, among them the State Ministry award for her outstanding research in 2024. She is currently speaker of a highly interdisciplinary collaborative research consortium (CRC ECOSENSE), investigating climate change impacts on forest fluxes and dynamics with novel autonomous sensor systems.
