Submission procedure

Madagascar has become well-known for the rapid decline of its native biodiversity. Open biomes – especially grasslands and savannas – make up the majority of the island’s vegetation cover today, but the extent of grasslands and their expansion relative to human colonisation in the Holocene have been the subject of intense and ongoing debate. As a result, giving practical recommendations for conservation policies and supporting livelihoods of the Malagasy people is challenging.

This special issue of Plants, People, Planet will bring together an exciting body of interdisciplinary research, reviews, case studies, and opinion pieces, focused on Malagasy grasslands, their management / conservation and their relevance for Malagasy society.

We encourage submissions from researchers working in diverse backgrounds – earth, natural, and social sciences – with a past, present and future lens, to improve the theoretical and empirical understanding of open ecosystems and their contributions to livelihoods and conservation on Madagascar.

Key themes of the special issue include:

  • Establishing a multidisciplinary understanding of Madagascar’s grassy biomes, past and present
  • Developing methodologies and research objectives that improve understanding of Holocene and Pleistocene grassy biome dynamics
  • Understanding people’s relationships with, use of, and impacts on grassy biomes in Madagascar
  • Developing meaningful conservation strategies and land management practices to benefit plants and people on Madagascar in the near future

We welcome submissions by 31 January 2023. Please contact the editorial office if you have any questions or a potential manuscript that you would like to discuss.

With best wishes,

Dylan Davis, Jan Hackel, Leanne Phelps, Tanambelo Rasolondrainy, Estelle Razanatsoa, and George Tiley

Please note that our publisher, Wiley, has arrangements to cover the publication fee for authors based in certain institutions or regions, and there are some waivers and discounts available for special issue authors who lack funds and are not covered by one of these two routes. Given the focus of the special issue, it is worth noting that authors based in Madagascar are eligible to receive an automatic waiver under Wiley’s automatic waivers and discounts scheme. We do not want lack of funds to be a barrier to contributing to the special issue, so if you have a great article idea, please get in touch and we can discuss options to support you.
