Last updated: 26 Oct, 2020

We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2019 New Phytologist Tansley Medal for Excellence in Plant Science!

The calibre of candidates was exceptionally high. Five applicants were shortlisted and the judging panel has awarded two Tansley Medals, to Dr Philippa Borrill, and to Prof. Kai Zhu. All the shortlisted applicants have authored a Tansley insight review, published in New Phytologist.

Philippa Borrill is a Lecturer in the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham, UK. Philippa’s research uses genetic and genomic approaches to understand how polyploidy influences gene expression and ultimately phenotype in wheat. She is particularly interested in identifying genes that regulate senescence and nutrient remobilisation to improve wheat grain nutrient content.

Kai Zhu is an assistant professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a global ecologist and quantitative environmental scientist in the fields of global change ecology, ecological modeling, and environmental data science. He is building a quantitative and interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of climate change, biodiversity, and ecosystem processes.
