It is with great sadness that the New Phytologist Foundation has learned of the death of Prof. David Lewis. David served as Executive Editor (Editor in Chief) from 1983 to 1995 and his contribution to the journal and the Foundation was enormous. Under David’s leadership the journal flourished, and some insights into developments during his tenure can be found in an article he co-authored with Jonathan Ingram in 2002 ‘A brief history of New Phytologist’ (https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1046/j.0028-646X.2001.00305.x).
David continued to be involved in the journal, publishing work as recently as 2020. His most recent publications include a stimulating Viewpoint ‘Boron: the essential element for vascular plants that never was’ (https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nph.15519).
