We are delighted to announce that Tommaso Jucker is the winner of the 2020 New Phytologist Tansley Medal, an annual award that recognises an outstanding contribution to plant science by an early career researcher.

Tommaso’s research focuses on the processes behind the structure and function of the world’s forests, and how these might respond to rapid environmental change. Tommaso, a NERC Independent Research Fellow and Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK, brings his ideas together in his Tansley insight, ‘Deciphering the fingerprint of disturbance on the three-dimensional structure of the world’s forests’.

There were also two outstanding runners up:

Lingfei Hu, an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Soil and Water Resources and Environmental Science, Zhejian University, China, with his Tansley insight, ‘Integration of multiple volatile cues into plant defense responses

Petra Marhava, a Researcher at the Umea Plant Science Centre, University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden, with her Tansley insight, ‘Recent developments in the understanding of PIN polarity

Congratulations to Tommaso, Lingfei, and Petra! Read more about the 2020 Tansley Medal in the Editorial by Holly Slater and Liam Dolan, published today in New Phytologist vol. 233, issue 2.

The judging panel for the 2020 competition was comprised of New Phytologist Editors Amy Austin, Liam Dolan, and Elena Kramer.

As with so many things over the last two years, the 2020 Tansley Medal award has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re pleased to be moving ahead with the 2022 round of the New Phytologist Tansley Medal, which is open for applications until midnight on 15 January 2022! You can find more information here.
